Know your farmer, know your food. It is the motto of Milltown Valley Meats, located at 6304 Mount Harmony Road in Greenwood.

Both multi-generational farmers, owners Doug and Ann Russell started their business selling half and whole freezer beef. “This has been a good venture for us but many people do not have enough freezer space in their home for a half of a beef,” shared Ann Russell. “The switch to selling individually packaged cuts of beef was a way to offer our product to a larger range of friends and neighbors.”

Following Ann Russell’s retirement from a career in the federal government, the Russells founded Milltown Valley Meats in the Spring of 2020. “Because of COVID, it took a little longer to get a steady supply of beef for our customers but the satisfaction of providing a fresh local supply of beef has been rewarding. I believe consumers are more interested than ever in knowing that they are purchasing beef that is raised in their community.”

Ann Russell added that at a time when many families are two or three generations removed from agriculture, it is important to share their family story and bring awareness to the agricultural industry and all that it provides.

The Russells offer locally raised and locally process grass and grain-fed beef that is hormone-free. What sets their meat apart from grocery stores is their personal connection to their family ranch. “While there is nothing wrong with the beef you can purchase at a local grocery store, there is no information provided regarding the source,” added Ann Russell. “It may be raised in the USA but there are increasing numbers of cattle imported from foreign countries. The country of origin labeling requirement was dropped by the government several years ago. I believe anytime you purchase locally to ‘know your farmer, know your food’ you have the opportunity to support your neighbor and have better control of what you feed your own family.”

The Russells know that word-of-mouth testimonials are their greatest advertisement. “We have been fortunate to have great customers. A satisfied customer who brings you a new customer is a great advertisement.”
