Ben Geren Community Complex Set to Open Junior Golf Program

The Ben Geren Community Complex (the former First Tee of Fort Smith), operated by Sebastian County, will kick off its first full-season youth golf program in March. The Ben Geren Youth Golf Academy had its first session in the fall of 2020 with 107 youth participants, a third of which were young ladies. The 2021 Ben Geren Youth Golf Academy season will start on March 23. Three subsequent youth golf sessions will take place later in 2021, two in the summer and one in the fall.

The Ben Geren Youth Golf Academy will offer a variety of classes including SNAG (starting new at golf) for 3-5 year-olds, traditional coed classes for juniors 5-16 years of age, and an LPGA/USGA girls golf class will also be offered to girls ages 6-16. This class makes learning the game of golf fun, social, and less intimidating for girls.

Spring and fall sessions will run eight consecutive weeks and the two summer sessions will run four weeks, meeting twice per week. These sessions will feature the basics of learning golf through fun and proven methods for junior golfers.

Ben Geren’s PGA Professional Matt Brown will be directing all classes for Ben Geren Youth Golf Academy. Brown has been trained and certified in PGA Coach, US Kids, and was the previous First Tee Coach at Wolf Ridge Golf Course in Poteau. Brown will also be using the American Development Model, which aims to help all individuals realize their athletic potential and utilize sports as a path toward an active and healthy lifestyle.
