Yesterday I was on the deck, reading my bible, and just spending time with the Lord. I looked at my ugly toes, and there was a butterfly sitting on my toe. It stayed so long I was able to get a picture. I couldn’t figure out why something so beautiful would want to be in the midst of something so ugly.
The butterfly looked beautiful in the midst of my sadness.
I realized life does not just end when we experience tragedy and pain. Life keeps going. Even if it’s hard to wake up each morning and face another day of sadness, life keeps going.
Within a minute, my six year old son was running out the front door, slamming the screen door, hollering, “Momma, there’s a butterfly on your toe!” When he saw the butterfly, he immediately went to chasing it. He didn’t pause and say, “Mommmm…. you need a pedicure!” or “Mom! You need to paint your toes!” or “Momma, that thing is on your ugly toes!”
Instead, in the eyes of an innocent child, he was amazed. His energy and outlook on the surroundings was what I needed. He just looked at this moment in time that was paused in time to look at God’s beautiful creation, the butterfly.
I was concentrating on the ugliness of my toes taking the picture. I was concentrating on my sadness. I was concentrating at the surroundings. I was concentrating on my heart that hurts so violently that some times it feels as if I cant breathe.
But my son, he didn’t see Momma’s ugly toes. He saw the beautiful butterfly and the life before him. He saw the pattern of its wings and the beauty of its coloring. He saw a chance to run in circles with joy with giggles while chasing it.
He saw a chance to smile at the beauty and not the ugliness.
So today, if you are struggling to see the beauty in anything of this world’s chaos or your current situation, and all you see is ugliness around you, walk out side. Let the breeze blow through your hair and let the sun shine down on you. Look at God’s beautiful scenery He has painted just for you to remind you, He is still there. He hasn’t forgotten about you. He has never left you. He is waiting on you. He sees your heart and He loves you so much.
